Objective
Increase bookings and expansion across Africa
Lane Rentals entered the West African market with a clear mission: to bridge the gap in reliable, transparent vehicle rental services for the African diaspora and local business travelers. Operating in high-demand hubs like Accra and Lagos, the company quickly realized that traditional international payment gateways were ill-equipped for the nuances of African cross-border commerce. While the demand for their fleet was high, the technical friction at checkout was preventing the brand from scaling at its true potential.

the Challenge
The primary roadblock was "Currency Friction." Initially, Lane Rentals utilized Stripe, which required all bookings to be denominated in USD. For a customer in Ghana or Nigeria, this meant:
Unexpected FX Costs: Users were forced to pay conversion fees dictated by their local banks, often making the rental significantly more expensive than advertised.
High Failure Rates: Many local cards have strict limits on international/USD transactions, leading to a "High Abandonment Rate" as bookings failed at the final click.
Brand Trust: Pricing a local service in a foreign currency created a psychological barrier, making the service feel "foreign" rather than "local and accessible."
“We needed to collect payments from our customers. Initially, we made the mistake of denominating all services in dollars and integrating Stripe. It fell flat with our users. In fact, they complained on social media."
the Solution
By integrating with Startbutton, Lane Rentals integrated with local payment methods in Ghana and is currently testing other markets.
Lane Rentals integrated Startbutton’s Transact and Expand suites to localize their entire financial stack. Instead of a one-size-fits-all global gateway, they implemented:
Local Payment Rails: Enabled customers to pay via Mobile Money (MTN, Telecel) in Ghana and Bank Transfers/Verve in Nigeria.
Dynamic Currency Pricing: Allowed the platform to display prices in GHS and NGN, while Lane Rentals maintained their back-end accounting in their preferred currency.
Merchant of Record (MoR) Support: By using Startbutton as their MoR, Lane Rentals bypassed the need for complex local entity setup in every new market, allowing them to focus strictly on fleet management and customer service.
the Result
Expand the "Result" block: The impact of localizing payments was immediate. By removing the USD barrier, Lane Rentals achieved:
Higher Conversion: A noticeable reduction in "cart abandonment" at the payment stage.
Market Velocity: The ability to launch in Nigeria was accelerated by months because the payment infrastructure was already unified through a single API.
Operational Efficiency: Automated reconciliation of local currency payments into a central dashboard, reducing the manual workload for their finance team.
